How To Raise Healthy Active Kids

without pushing them to exercise?

by Ailenned B.| September 1, 2021
Did you know that according to WHO statistics:

  • In 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight. Of these over 650 million were obese.
  • 39 million children under the age of 5 were overweight or obese in 2020.

According to statistics put out by the Center of Disease Control:
  • 1 in 3 Americans will have type 2 diabetes by the year 2050.
  • Of the people diagnosed with diabetes, 210,000 are children and adolescents younger than age 20 years.
All these facts have triggered an alarm and made children’s sedentary lifestyle a worldwide problem now. That’s probably the reason why you’re here and reading this article.

I’m guessing you have noticed your child gaining weight and getting more sedentary the past few weeks or months.

The good news is, it can still be reversed.

Your child still has a chance to become more active and hopefully live a healthy life in the future with your help.

Let’s start with the benefits

of physical activity.

  • Insufficient physical activity is a key risk factor for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes. When our kids move, there is a lesser chance of getting these types of diseases.
  • Not getting enough physical activity can lead to energy imbalance and can increase the risk of becoming overweight or obese. Which means the more they exercise, the more likely they won’t get obese.
  • Physical activity can brighten your child’s mood. No more grumpy and frowning children. We hope so!
We can list a lot of benefits here but we all know that bottomline, physical activity can keep our children healthy and happy.

Children need at least 60minutes of physical activity a day.

WHO defines physical activity as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure. Both moderate- and vigorous-intensity physical activity improve health.

So how do you start to turn things around?

How do you encourage a child to exercise when you can’t even summon them to go upstairs or take a short walk?

The truth is, exercise might not be the perfect solution for our kids today. It doesn’t really excite them as the word ‘movie’, ‘games’, ‘play.’

We’ve seen many parents shed so many tears from the stress that comes whenever they force their children to exercise.

ACTIVE PLAY
If you can’t win them over with a yoga mat or some dance class, encourage them to do active play instead. Active play helps your kids reap the benefits of exercise without doing an actual workout.

The thing is, not all play is considered active. Not all games can help them spend their energy in a healthy manner.

As parents, you have a bigger role to play in encouraging your children to do more physical activity in a fun way by:

  • Choosing the right activities
  • Inventing games that would open doors for sweating and pure fun
  • Track their progress to make sure they are consistent
